Bagan listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Bagan, Myanmar was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on Saturday by the UN at the Azerbaijani capital Baku, nearly after 3 decades that the complex of Buddhist temples was first nominated for listing by officials. Bagan was first nominated as a World Heritage Site in 1995 but plans were later scrapped due to issues with the government.

This decision recognizes the importance of the landmark which the locals regard so highly—an importance that will surely bring more visits to the Golden Land. Some good news after earthquakes reportedly damaged the structures, most recently in 2016 when nearly 200 temples were damaged by the quake 6.8 on the Richter scale. But now, Bagan, a home to over 2,200 temples which remain from 11th to 13th centuries, is now more than a major tourist attraction and an oldest archaeological zone of Myanmar.
